 The Uttar Pradesh Provincial Civil Service (PCS) is a group ‘B’ service under the administrative jurisdiction of the state government.  It has a cadre strength of nearly 1100 gazetted officers, of whom about two-thirds are recruited directly to PCS through the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) with the approval of the Governor of the state. The remaining one third is promoted from the subordinate categories like Tahsildar etc. through the departmental exams conducted by the state government.

For nearly 100-200 vacancies in PCS for which a 3 stage exam is conducted by UPPSC each year, about 4.5 lakh aspirants appear at the Prelims level.
